Why Use Art or Culture in Engaging with Community?

A WORKSHOP

16 July 2017, Sunday

Time: 9am – 5 pm

Ruang by ThinkCity (5, Jalan Stesen Sentral, City Centre, 50470 Kuala Lumpur)

This is the second of two workshops on Community Engaged Arts (CEA) organised by the Community Engaged Arts Network. The workshop is aimed at practitioners (individuals or groups) who are currently involved in delivering or organizing community engaged arts work.

Objective:

Practitioners (i.e. artists and cultural workers) have expressed that they would like to know more about “how” and “why” use arts in socially driven activities. This workshop aims to facilitate a discussion about this topic to develop a deeper theoretical understanding of practice and the application of arts for social good in the community context.

Workshop format:

  • This workshop will reflect on and analyse THREE CASE STUDIES that use arts or culture

  • Case studies will be presented by three different practitioners to illustrate a specific method of arts or culture activity applied for social good in the community context.

  • The three presentations will be highly participatory and involve presentations, hands-on experience, questioning and discussing.

  • Each presentation will be followed by a facilitated discussion led by an experienced discussant

  • The workshop will also look at creating assessment indicators to measure the effectiveness of such work.

Logistics:

  • No fee required, participation is fully sponsored

  • Lunch and coffee/tea breaks will be provided

  • Participants are free to use Bahasa, English or Chinese in this workshop.

Those who are multilingual will help facilitate interpretation.

About the organisers:

Janet Pillai and Sunitha Janamohanan are the administrators of a regional network of CEA practitioners, aimed at connecting practitioners and researchers in the Asian region. The CEA Network was started in recognition of an increase in Malaysia of artists stepping into communities to conduct arts activities and also an increase in activists and socially conscious individuals using the arts as a catalyst for change; but that there was a dearth in information about these individuals and, specifically, their practice. Workshops such as this are a step in trying to facilitate stronger relationships between practitioners and to equip artists and culture workers with new skills and knowledge that will help them in their work.
